Memorial tribute by U3A Moraira-Teulada

ON an unusually cold and miserable day, on 11 February, about 150 people gathered at Moraira Park for a commemoration to dedicate a bench bought by members of U3A Moraira-Teulada, in memory of the late Shirley Baehr.

Shirley, who was one of the founder members of Moraira-Teulada U3A, was the Group Coordinator from almost the first day of its inauguration, in 2008.

Shirley was a very enthusiastic committee member and, as Group Coordinator, many of her ideas for new Groups are still running successfully.

Shirley’s family flew out from various parts of the world to Moraira to join her husband Laurence, her family and many friends and members of U3A for the remembrance.

The current President, John Hopwood, gave a short speech and glasses of cava were raised in a toast. The bench is placed near an olive tree planted to commemorate the late Pamela Kershaw, the original founder member of this U3A, and when a short tribute was made by former President Ann Colclough, Ann wryly commented that “they can now talk to each other forever”, which brought a burst of laughter from those present.

The bench is in a lovely position in the park behind the beach, near to the petanque rinks and looking out to sea. Members are encouraged to visit the area.
