One of the ten most wanted fugitives in Spain arrested following a police chase in Benidorm

IN a Crimestoppers-style appeal last year, 25-year-old Gareth Bryan Edwards was listed as one of the ten most wanted fugitives by the Spanish national police, alongside a line-up of drug dealers, killers and a member of the Italian Mafia.

Listed also as one of the UK’s most wanted men and  described as ‘very dangerous’ Edwards, from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, was wanted by authorities for ‘crimes of robbery with violence and intimidation’ and was facing three life sentences before he escaped the UK.

Police suspected he had fled to Spain and believed he was involved in drug trafficking.

Edwards was approached by the local police of Benidorm on Friday night as he entered a pub on busy Mallorca Street in the ‘Little England’ area of the city after they recognised him from the appeal.

On being asked to show identification, he produced a passport which was not his – in fact belonging to a person of another nationality.

Police then asked him some more questions and not being satisfied with his answers, asked him to go with them to the local station.

It was at this point that Edwards fled the scene, pushing the officers and running off towards holiday apartments in the Guiri area where he was found hiding near the swimming pool.

Upon arrest, Edwards was searched and allegedly found to have three packages of cocaine and a list of clients.

Edwards has already appeared before a Spanish judge who remanded him in custody.

The case has now passed into the hands of the National Police and Interpol.
