OWNERS OF the Terra Mitica Theme Park in Benidorm have been cleared of the charge of reckless homicide by a court in Alicante.
The appeal hearing relates to a fatal accident which occurred in 2014, when teenage Icelandic tourist, Andri Freyr Sveinsson,18, died after being thrown from his seat on one of the park’s thrill rides.
The hearing concluded that the death was accidental and no blame could be attached to either parties.
An independent report also matched the evidence, revealing the tragedy was caused by a design fault on the eggcup style seats of the ‘Hell’ Rollercoaster. However, the ride had been running smoothly for several years and passed all it’s inspections and revisions without the fault being detected.
The court heard that since the accident the seats have been completely modified by the manufacturer to ensure the ride adheres to all safety regulations and no further accidents of this kind occur.
