IT is thought that around 20 per cent of the population suffer from foot odour, but what actually causes smelly feet?
A poor diet, metabolic disorders, fungal infections, eating certain food or wearing shoes made of synthetic materials are all factors, according to the College of Chiropodists of Valencia (Icopv).
However, the Icopv also noted that generally the most common cause of this problem is the proliferation of bacteria in the body due to excessive sweating. The use of deodorants and antiperspirants “is not a solution” said Icopv who recommend going to a podiatrist to determine the cause.
Regarding treatments to solve the smelly feet, they can range from antibiotics or anti-fungals, applying drying powder treatments, the elimination of certain foods and in cases of extreme sweating, surgical treatments.
To help prevent odour remember to wash feet daily and fully dry them. Avoid wearing shoes that are too tight or are made from synthetic materials, and opt for leather, canvas or mesh materials to allow the feet to breathe and wear socks that repel moisture, are wool or cotton.
