24 hour festival of futsal comes to El Altet

THIS SUMMER, futsal teams from across Spain will head to El Altet for the 24 Horas de Futsal Competition, one of the region’s biggest events for the sport.

Futsal is a variant of  five-a-side football introduced in Uruguay in 1930. Unlike some other forms of indoor football, the game is played on a hard court surface delimited by lines. Walls or boards are not used.

In addition, the ball used in the game has a smaller surface calling for players to place more emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique plus ball control and passing in small spaces.

Although the game is most popular across South America, Russia and Eastern Europe, the National Spanish side currently sit second in the World rankings.

Announcing this year’s El Altet tournament, councillor for Sports Jesus Pareja, said he expected it to be one of the biggest futsal events in the Province with local teams including local teams El Altet and Arenales Del Sol signed up to take part.

This year’s tournament has star backing, as one of the current World Champions is amongst the sponsors. Alan Brandi was a member of the Argentinian team that beat Russia in the last World Cup in Colombia in 2016, scoring two goals in their victory.

He said he was happy to be involved in the tournament of kings where the slogan of the sport ‘ Play with heart, play clean’ will be valued.

The tournament takes place at the El Altet Sports Pavilion on the weekend of June 30 and July 1 and is expected to attract 16 teams, with over 200 players due to take part.

Entries are still open and can be made through the website www.eltorneo.es or at Café Mirambel-El Altet.
