SAN JAVIER Airport, gateway to the Murcia City, surrounding areas and beach resorts of the Mar Menor and beyond, had a bumper start to 2017 according to figures released today.
The first quarter of the year from January to March saw 1,067 landings and take offs, an increase of 19.1% on the same period last year.
Passenger figures for the period January to March were even more impressive almost reaching 130,000. The 129,298 passengers passing through the airport still represents a like for like increase of 43.5% on last year.
The month of March alone registered an increase of 3.9% on the same month in 2016 with 53,015 passengers passing through the facility and 438 take off and landings.
Last month the first scheduled British Airways plane flew into San Javier from London Heathrow, the world’s sixth largest airport, with links to 160 worldwide destinations.
This twice weekly service was seen as a major coup for the airport and important for the golf resorts and business people of the area, with its offer of business class seating and more generous baggage allowance.
With new destinations on board for the summer and planes flying in and out of the airport at increased capacity the airport are looking forward to the busy summer and autumn seasons in a bouyant mood.
