ON 5th APRIL about 40 people gathered at Javea Green Bowls Club for the finals of a competition held annually in memory of the Moraira U3A founder member and Vice President, Pamela Kershaw.
Two competitions were held, one for singles and the other for pairs.
Two couples administer the bowls Groups, David and Eileen Haxon manage the Wednesday Group and Ray and Pauline Durrant run the Monday Group, and they had arranged Heats during the weeks before Finals day.
After several matches had been played the finals consisted of; the Singles competition David Bell (Monday Grp) against Malcolm Need (Weds Grp), and in the Pairs competition Eileen Haxon and P.C Davidson against Brian Bell and David Bearman.
The singles match turned out to be very exciting, with David leading most of the time, but Malcolm catching him up at the end of the allocated time, necessitating a playoff of one more end, which David won.
The winning pair consisted of Eileen Haxon and PC. Congratulations to all of them.
Gordon Kershaw and current U3A President, John Hopwood, presented the winning cups and wine. The photos show these, and one of all participants and scorers.
After an excellent lunch, John thanked everyone who had made the day a memorable one and thanked all the participants, organisers and helpers for holding another excellent competition. David Haxon introduced Don Roberts, who had first instigated the Bowls Groups and then gave a little talk about Pamela Kershaw as there are now a number of U3A members who never knew her or what she did.
Even though the weather could have been a bit warmer for us, the whole day was a brilliant success.
