THE THREE main sandy beaches of Benidorm, beloved by millions of tourists every year, have received the coveted European Blue Flag award for the next twelve months.
Playa Levante, Playa Poniente and Playa Mal Past, the small, tucked away beach at the foot of the Mirador del Castillo in Benidorm’s Old Town have all received the award.
Beaches awarded the Blue Flag must pass stringent environmental conditions such as water quality, information, environmental education, environmental management, safety, services and facilities.
City Councillor, responsible for Beaches, Lorenzo Martínez, expressed his satisfaction at the news.
“The concession of the new Blue Flags that will wave over the beaches ” he said “and our waters have an impeccable environmental quality.
Martinez added that Benidorm deserves the award. ” With these awards it is clear the commitment we have to our most precious treasure … our beaches,” he explained.
The Comunitat Valenciana will fly blue flags on 129 beaches and 15 ports during 2017, four more than last year, which places the autonomy in first place in the Spanish ranking, receiving 684 ensigns. Behind Valencia are Galicia (113), Catalonia (95) and Andalusia (90).
