ONE HUNDRED and fifty children from 15 schools within the Alicante Province, took part in a cycle challenge around the streets of Finestrat Pueblo last week.
The school children, aged between 5 and 14 were taking part in the second Trofeo Escuelas de Ciclismo de Finestrat.
The day began in Carrer L’hort with 40 pupils aged 13 to 14, taking on the first gymkhana, a time trial around traffic cones, won by local boy Jaume Guardeno of Alfas del Pi.
Three other local children also performed well in the various skill tests of the day. Jaume Lloret who won in his first year fry category; And Hugo Ruiz and Josep Miquel Climent, who achieved the 8th position in the 2nd year and first year children, respectively.
The overall winning school of the challenge day, which is part of the Provincial Challenge calendar, was Alfàs del Pi, which managed to add 40 points to their running total.
Finestrat Sports Councellor David Alarcon, speaking after the event, said:
“We had a fantastic day in the village, full of passion for sport amongst young people”, he said. “The extra people the event brought to the pueblo helped to bring more business to our bars and restaurants too”
