Church fire bomber arrested

A 44-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested by the National Police in Torre del Mar for allegedly hurling a Molotov cocktail at an icon of the Virgin Mary in the Virgen de los Desemparados Church in Velez Malaga.

The man, who is thought to be mentally ill, threw the homemade explosive at around noon last Tuesday. The device failed to detonate, instead spilling fuel on the icon’s robes.
Officers located the alleged assailant after sifting through CCTV images. The raided the man’s house and found two other similar devices before arresting him.

The man has now been charged with property damage and religious hatred.

The arresting officers confiscated four computers, two electronic tablets, a pendrive, a mobile phone and clothing which were apparently used in the attack. The man has now been sent for psychiatric evaluation.

Priests, who are due to display the icon of the Virgin next on May 13, are now meeting to consider ways to prevent any similar incidents with CCTV and other security measures.
