AKIRA DOG Sanctuary was founded on April 1, 2011 after local animal lovers noticed a need for a shelter in the areas of Benissa, Teulada and Moraira.
After a lot of hard work and effort, the shelter in Benissa was completed and opened its doors on April 4, 2016; a full five years after AKIRA’s conception.
AKIRA have rescued to date hundreds of abandoned dogs and re-homed them in Spain, Holland, Germany and the UK. During the year 2014 alone, despite not having a shelter, AKIRA rescued 128 dogs and re-homed 100.
AKIRA opened their charity shop in Avenida de Portet, Moraira on February 1, 2013 and thanks to all their volunteers, this was such a big success that they moved into a much larger shop a few doors down, at 21 Avenida de Portet, Moraira in June 2015.
The AKIRA charity shop is open Monday – Saturday 10.00am – 1.30pm and on Tuesdays and Thursdays they also open in the evening 5.00pm – 7.00pm.
AKIRA continue to look for more sponsors to help fund the shelter and its ongoing running costs.
They have already been recognised for their tremendous efforts by Liberty Seguros, Royal Canin, Restaurant Jacaranda, Clinica Aliaga, the famous guitarist Brian May from Queen, Family Charlton, Family Barnett, Family Oosterhaven, Family Rene, Family Waters, Alliance Partnership, Coopers Removal, Casa Antigua, Hans Hobi and Maria Enz, Christianes Hundesalon and Canned Sunlight.
The board – Liz Dickson, Pam North, Louise Smee, Gillian Hayward, Peter Tilsley, Anne Perry and Steve Funnel always need volunteers and there’s a wide variety of activities to get involved in –
• Walking and playing with the dogs
• Washing the dogs
• Fundraising committee
• On the day event assistance
• Shop assistants for the charity shop in Moraira
• Help finding sponsors
AKIRA’s Fundraising Committee has been very active since 2011, organising BBQs, dances, a twice-monthly bookstall at Moraira Market, wine-tastings, garden parties and monthly quiz nights in Benissa.
Their Annual May Fayre at Font Santa is always a remarkable success and will be held this year on Sunday May 21 from 12.30pm – 5.00pm.
Promising a great family day out, guests will be kept well and truly entertained by Mike Lee from Le Cabaret who will MC the afternoon, the Javea Gems Cheerleaders and Marcia’s Dance School as they browse the trader stalls, try their luck on the tombola and enjoy a treat from the cake stand. Not to mention there will be face-painting available for the younger ones whilst the older ones can relax at the bar!
