AROUND 100 walkers are taking part in an early morning 5k walk in Estepona on Saturday, May 6, raising awareness of self-harm and suicide.
The annual event, entitled “Darkness into Light”, takes place across four continents and is organised by Pieta House, an Irish charity which provides help to those at risk of suicide.
The event was brought to Estepona by 74-year-old Michael O’Halloran, originally from Dublin but now living in Spain six months each year. Mr O’Halloran became involved with the charity after both his son and two nephews killed themselves.
Michael said he hopes to decrease stigma around the subject, explaining, “Unfortunately, quite a lot of people are very uncomfortable if suicide or self-harm comes into conversation, it is still whispered about. We must change this.”
Participants will set off from the Palm Beach Chiringuito at 5am on Saturday, May 6. Adults are asked to donate €20 to the charity, while students are asked for €10 and under 16s can participate for free.
Those interested in getting involved can register by email at Michael.firstname.lastname@example.org, or in person on the day.
