Real Madrid donate La Liga trophy to the city

AFTER FIVE barren years Real Madrid won their first La Liga trophy since 2012, when they beat Malaga 2-0 at the Rosaleda stadium.

Only needing a draw to seal the title, a goal after two minutes, from Christiano Ronaldo settled the away side’s nerves before a second half goal from Karim Benzema sealed the victory that sent the Galacticos fans wild.

Last Monday, on the day after winning the 33rd league title in Malaga, the party continued at the head offices of The Community of Madrid and the Town Hall

The squad and coaching team, along with Florentino Pérez and the Board of Directors, left the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and went first to the Palacio de Cibeles, the head offices of The Community of Madrid.

Madrid Mayor, Manuela Carmena, welcomed the team and congratulated them: “Since you are so amazing, we didn’t expect anything less from you, we were hoping you would win. We love you, it’s an honour for Madrid to have this team.”

Chairman Florentino Pérez called the victory historic “This is our 33rd league title, no one has more, and we are proud to have achieved it together and united.”

“This team has shown that it is the best in terms of the unity and mutual understanding, and with a relentless enthusiasm from the fans that has spurred us on from the first minute to the last.” Said Perez.

“Thank you very much for your affection and for welcoming us to share this triumph in the home of all the people of Madrid and in front of all our friends the madridistas”

The champions then travelled to the Real Casa de Correos, head offices of The Community of Madrid.

After an exchange of gifts, President Cristina Cifuentes, welcomed the contingent saying:
“This is your home and we open the doors with a lot of affection because we are celebrating a very important new triumph for who undoubtedly is the best team in the world, that’s why you are a team of champions”.

Captain Sergio Ramos, referenced the upcoming Champions League final against Juventus, saying: “We still have another dream to fulfil. Thanks to the fans for their affection and support for the team on a world-wide level. Hopefully we can give you many more titles over the coming years”.

The most anticipated moment came when the players, after leaving their autograph in the book of signatures, went out on to the balcony of the Real Casa de Correos to greet the Madridistas who packed the Puerta del Sol.
