Scandinavian ‘Cool’ for spring

SCANDINAVAIN ‘COOL’ are definitely the buzz words at the moment. From books to TV, music to food, fashion to interiors our Northern neighbours are considered to be at the cutting edge of every genre.

As for our homes, well we have been well aware of Scandinavian design ever since a certain Swedish furniture giant landed on our shores thirty odd years ago.

Many a home in the UK and here in Spain has had an IKEA makeover, but so often our bedroom is the last place that gets a ‘Scandi’ look.

We all know a good night’s sleep can do wonders for our mood and general health – so creating a relaxing bedroom is vital.

Simplicity and cosiness is the Nordic answer to creating a tranquil bedroom in which to get your full forty winks. It’s important to create a space you enjoy spending time in to ensure you wake up feeling refreshed.

Small changes can make a huge difference. Here are our top tips for updating your bedroom this spring.

CLEAR THE CLUTTER
A tidy space equals a tidy mind, allowing you to relax and feel at ease. Put effort into finding the perfect storage solution to keep your bedroom clutter free.

TACTILE TEXTILES
Winter in the northern hemisphere is usually long and dark. The bedroom should be a sanctuary of comfort, and textured textiles are the perfect remedy for a bland and boring bedroom.

DIM ALL THE LIGHTS
Lighting is a great way to add a sense of tranquility and calm to your bedroom. The soft glow of flickering candles or a dim bedside lamp prepares your mind and body to relax. Turning the lights down an hour before bed tells your brain to shift into sleep/relaxation mode.

Generating the right ambience in the bedroom is key for a good night’s rest. Good blinds are also essential as total darkness during the night will help you achieve a deep, uninterrupted sleep.

PURIFY THE AIR
Clean sleeping simply means getting 7-8 hours of good quality, uninterrupted sleep a night. House plants and clean air can help contribute to this. Plants help purify the air while you sleep, by turning carbon dioxide into oxygen. Plants like jasmine and lavender give off a beautiful natural scent which helps create a soothing ambience.

CHOOSE THE PERFECT COLOUR
Blue can be calming and promote serenity for some, but be cold and unfriendly to others. Green hues are famous for creating a restful space, and it’s usually a safe bet when deciding on a new bedroom colour. Bright yellows are stimulating, meaning they are less appropriate when creating a serene ambiance.

There are many different methods people use to help them drift off at night. One of the latest trends are scented pillow sprays. The aromatic blends – usually of lavender and camomile – can help calm a busy mind and sooth you to sleep.
