Seven reasons to love La Vila rugby

ONE OF the most prestigious sporting events on the Costa Blanca takes place next weekend, when the famous La Vila Benidorm Rugby Sevens Tournament hits the town.

This year is the 31st running of the event, and as usual the tournament is held over two days (Saturday June 3 and Sunday June 4).

Villajoyosa has hosted the annual International Rugby Seven a Side Tournament, played at the La Vila Rugby Stadium for the past thirty years with the competition catering for all levels of senior seven-a-side rugby, being divided into two sections (Invitational sides and Club sides.

The mens teams confirmed for the weekend are:

Shamdong (national team of China) Olymp from Kazajistan, Chisinau from Moldavia, Belgium Barbarians, Wetherby England, Catalunya 7s, HMS Sultan UK, In Alcool Milan Italy, Murcia Selection and La Vila.

Teams confirmed for the womens competition are:
Shamdong (national team of China) Olymp from Kazajistan, Cote Argent from France, Malaga University, Madrid 7, an Alicante Selection and La Vila.

This thriving event is supported by Generalitat Valenciana, Villajoyosa Council and Patronato Turismo Costa Blanca and has prize money for international champions of 2.500 euros, with the runners up receiving 1.000 euros.

Saturday games will start at 11.00am and run until 8.00pm whilst the Sunday games will start at 11.00am and finish at 7.00pm.

The finals will begin at 5.00pm on the Sunday and will be broadcast by TV Mediterraneo.

Free parking area and tickets for the event have prices of: Saturday 5 euro and Sunday 10 euros.

A two day pass costs 10 euros and for this fantastic event loved by the whole family, under 12’s can enter every day for free.

Visitors will find Villajoyosa Rugby Stadium is situated at Carretera El Pantano, Villajoyosa. Just take the motorway AP-7 exit Nº 66(Villajoyosa). At the first roundabout head for the mountain. It is about 1 km from the Motorway exit nº 66.

Or take the Villajoyosa by-pass, and take the middle exit, at the first roundabout, bear right towards the motorway entrance and at the second roundabout bear left towards the mountain.
