AN 11-YEAR-OLD Austrian boy has been identified as an alleged arsonist responsible for starting three blazes in Periana.

The child was found after firefighters rushed to put out several hundred metres of flames and caught him hiding behind the rocks, watching the fire. Rafael Torrubia, Periana’s Mayor, said the firemen reported the boy was behaving like a “young pyromaniac.”

He went on to explain the child had been living in Alta Axarquia for around a month and had a history of “problematic behaviour,” according to his school, adding, “it seems his parents are separated.”

Mr Torrubia praised the quick work of the firefighters for preventing the three fires spreading to houses and the town’s school.

Axarquia’s Provincial Firemen Consortium have been busy due to recent hire temperatures, putting out fires in a field and recycling point in Colmenar, as well as a cane fire in Nerja.

The Guardia Civil and Local Police are also investigating several fires in trees around the Almijara neighbourhood, which they believe could have been started intentionally.
