A DRIVER who was under the influence of drugs ploughed his BMW into a cyclist who was travelling at the side of the road on the N-332 on Sunday morning.
The 25-year-old Dutch man from Ondara, killed the cyclist – Alejandro Jaen, 32-years-old, from Benissa but born in Senija – instantly.
The accident occurred at kilometre 210 of the N-332 between Oliva and Denia at around 8.10am.
The victim – who was the son of a retired local police officer – was cycling with a friend, who was unharmed.
The driver fled the scene but was stopped by the Guardia Civil in El Verger.
He tested positive for cocaine and marijuana and was taken to the Guardia Civil headquarters in Gandia, to be heard and then brought to justice.
Three days of official mourning were decreed in Senija at an extraordinary plenary session of the Town Council on Sunday.
The driver was sent straight to prison without bail by the Superior Court of Justice of the Region of Valencia (TSJCV), charged with homicide, driving under the influence of narcotics, reckless driving and omission of the duty of relief.
The incident comes just five weeks after a 28-year-old Spanish woman from Gandia who was also under the influence of alcohol and drugs killed three cyclists at kilometre 206 of the N-332.
