Axarquia beaches set to be ‘cleaner than ever’

BEACHES on the Costa del Sol are set to be cleaner than ever this summer with the addition of three new cleaning boats in Axarquia, bringing the fleet’s total to 14.

The vessels, which operate between Rincon de la Victoria and Nerja, eliminate hydrocarbons as well as collecting solid waste and jellyfish.

Gregorio Campo, President of the Commonwealth of Costa del Sol-Axarquia Municipalities, said he was working with the University of Malaga to study how best to keep the area’s coastline clean, explaining “it is a tourist attraction that we must take care of and also important for locals who have a right to enjoy the sea at its best.”

The boats, which are spread across Axarquia, clean from Monday to Friday, 11am to 8pm everywhere expect Nerja and Torrox where they operate until 7pm. They will continue until 15 September.
