Torrevieja postman sentenced to 12 months in prison

THE TORREVIEJA postman who failed to deliver 226 letters and packages between 2011 and 2014 was sentenced to 12 months in prison and fined €900 by the Court of Alicante last week.

The sentence, passed by the High Court of Justice of the Region of Valencia (TSJCV) also disqualified the postman from employment within the public sector for four and a half years. This was however suspended for a period of three years.

The postman hid the undelivered mail in his locker and when the Inspection Unit asked him to open it, he said that he did not have the key. He later returned to his locker and attempted to flush the undelivered mail down the toilet.

The court also found him guilty of having committed misdeeds with the delivery of certified mail, in that he left the mail in the mailboxes without obtaining a signature from the recipient, often signing the receipts himself.

There is no appeal against the judgment.
