Women in business


FUENGIROLA’S Council have launched a campaign “Here works a woman,” to highlight and promote women in business.

The scheme is designed to pay tribute to the entrepreneurial work of the town’s women, which contributes greatly to the local economy.

Ana Mata, Councillor for Equality, and Ricardo von Wichmann, Coucillor for Trade, have worked together on the campaign, with Mata commenting, “the Department for Equality works 365 days a year with all areas of the town council and my colleagues are very aware we need to promote equality between women and men in everything we do.”

She added, “on this occasion, the Department for Trade has launched an initiative aimed at women working in local commerce, highlighting that we often do not notice women holding positions of responsibility and running their own business.”

She explained, “there is still a discrepancy in SMEs, with more men than women still opening businesses. We have to continue to offer measures to help women take on their own business.”

She added, “we want to not only fight gender violence but also work to help women into the world of work, providing not only the information necessary to start a business, but also training to give them the right tools to tackle a job… now there will be a sign up in every shop in Fuengirola where there is a woman working, but there is still a long way to go to achieve real equality between men and women.”

Ricardo von Wichmann explained, “the reality today is that many of the businesses that are opening in our town are either run by women or mostly employ women, this means that women, who until a few years ago were stuck doing work that went unrecognised such as housework, are now getting involved in different types of companies in all sectors.”

He added, “there are always ways of women reaching the highest levels and we are now seeing big companies increasingly employing more women because of the methodical way they think.” He concluded, “every activity the council organises has at least 50% involvement from women, and in the case our trade campaign, “Prizes for shopping in Fuengirola,” 68% of the shops involved were run by women.
