THE CITY of Calpe has installed 25 ceramic nests-houses on the roofs of selected properties in the old town as it aims to attract more birds to nest in the area and deter insects.

Local ceramist, Esteban Juarez designed the nests-houses to replicate mills, towers and boats, with one of them even replicating the emblematic Muralla Roja de Bofill.
The properties on which the nest-houses sit have been specially selected for having Arab roof tile.

The goal is that sparrows and swallows will nest in the historic centre, forming part of the landscape and deterring insects.
