A COUPLE in their seventies have been arrested for allegedly handing over €100,000 to a young Russian woman in exchange for her eight-month-old baby.
The child has now been placed in the care of child protective services in Malaga after the man and woman tried to take it in, reportedly because they wanted an heir to their fortune of several properties.
A lawyer and a Russian interpreter have also been arrested for their crime of allegedly helping to disguise the child’s paternity.
National Police officers started investigating in May when the couple took the child to a doctor to test for a congenital disease.
The doctor asked to see the baby’s biological mother and became suspicious, alerting child protection services.
It was found the real mother was a thirty-year-old Russian woman, who had travelled to Spain a month before giving birth in a private clinic and falsely registering the child’s father.
She was said to be living in one of the couple’s properties, in a converted garage measuring around 25 square metres.
