MOTORWAY COACH INFERNO

NINETEEN passengers and the driver on a coach to Alicante-Elche Airport had a lucky escape when it burst into flames.

It was just before 9.00am on Monday morning when the vehicle was travelling on the A-70 motorway between San Vicente del Raspeig and Alicante and approaching the roundabout where the exit to the University of Alicante is located.

Initially, the coach driver attempted to put out the small fire – as it was at first – with an extinguisher after he noticed smoke coming from the front of the vehicle, but it began to overwhelm him and the passengers left the coach in an orderly manner without panic, although one was treated for shock at the scene.

Within a short while, the whole coach had been completely burned out and destroyed, and included the luggage and personal effects of those on board.  It hasn’t been revealed where the passengers en route to the airport had originally boarded the coach.
