Non Married Rights

MY partner and I have been together for 15 years but we are not married, now that we have moved to Spain, I am interested in knowing what our rights are with regards to inheritance and inheritance tax?

If a couple are not married they have no claim to inherit any share of their partner’s assets. In addition, inheritance tax will be higher between couples who are not married than their married counterparts.

In the first instance the most important aspect is to draw up and sign a will, carefully dividing your assets in the manner that you wish to.

Please remember if you are not of Spanish nationality and you state in your will the European legislation that allows you more or even free disposal of you assets. Otherwise the Spanish law will apply.
