WHEN a young woman in Cañete la Real suffered a number of epileptic fits, an air ambulance was called.

The girl needed to be taken to hospital in Malaga – at least one hour’s drive away for treatment but when the helicopter arrived and landed at the local football club, the gates to the pitch were locked.

More than 45 minutes were wasted as the authorities tried to find someone with a key to the stadium and in the end, emergency services had to break the lock in order to allow access for the ambulance carrying the girl who had suffered two further fits.

The local council will be reviewing the situation of access to the pitch for the future.
