Celts July Open Day

0

LA Serena was the venue for the 2017 July Open Day and conditions were extremely hot – even for golf – with the glorious sunshine mixed in with some very high humidity.  Despite this, the conditions didn’t pose a problem for one or two of the players as the scores will attest.

On the day, NTP’s were won by Terry Fitzgerald, Sam Currie, John O’Brien and a new overseas player, Becky McGeehan, playing of + 1 handicap scooped three. Our visitors’ prize was won by Sam Currie with 42, the best score of the day.

Category III – Terence Welsh 33, Jane Knight 32 and Roy Sutherland 31.

Category II – Kenneth McGeehan 36, John Aitchison 36 and Alan Proudfoot 34; third Gary Hall 33.

Category I – Becky McGeehan 35, Terry Fitzgerald 35 and Andy Currie 32.  Second over-all went to Susan Owens with 37 points and the overall winner Gordon McCadden on 40 points.

The captain Alisdair McLean was at hand to present the monthly prizes and the lucky winners in the Crystal events were: Week 1 – winner, Janet Bryan 43, Pauvla Serakova 40 and Holly Thomson 40.  Week 2 – Ian McCormack 37, Karne Neal 37 and Steve Hopkins 36.

The medal winners were: Category II, Lynne McCormack 75 and Category I Pauvla Serkava 68. July medal, Category II, Lynne McCormack 61 and Category I Terry Fitzgerald 69.

Congratulations to all the winners and to those who participated.  It was great to see so many members remain for the presentation.

As to the Open Day itself, many people are deserving of grateful thanks. The hard working green-keeping staff under the guidance of Wayne the head green keeper for the fine condition of the course, and the clubhouse staff of Karolina and Jean looked after all requirements which allowed a great day of golf.  Thanks to Philip, Terry and Alisdair for their organisation of the event.

We used our monthly presentation to donate the fine sum of €800 to the Elche Children’s Home which was collected on our members’ charity day.  Roger and Jenny were there on behalf of the Home to acknowledge the contribution.  Roger thanked The Celts and the members for their generosity and also Bruno and La Serena for their support.

We are playing a round of The International League in El Saler which has staged the Spanish Open and is ranked in the top 10 courses of Europe.  We have, through the federation, organised a bus to take us to El Saler. Please let me or your captain know if you intend to use this free transport on the day.  Once again thank you to Andres and Alberto for all their support in Valencia.

We always welcome new members and guests and if you would like to play in one of our Open Days why not contact us?  For further details on membership call 615 466 398 or e-mail johnobrienalicante@gmail.com.
