Happy birthday to the TRAM

THE TRAM service that serves Alicante city and connects it to other areas of the northern Costa Blanca celebrated its 14th birthday on Tuesday.  Since it first ran on August 15 2003, the TRAM has carried more than 80 million passengers and has travelled almost 30 million kilometres.

The original route, part of which is now closed due to a lack of use, joined stations on the Puerta del Mar found along the beach in Alicante with El Campello.

Since that time and with the expansion of the services – and more planned for the future – precisely 69,508,098 people used the electrified TRAM service and a further 12,196,192 passengers travelled on the Benidorm to Denia section of the route (Line 9) that still uses diesel rolling stock until the current modernisation is completed.
