RESIDENTS of Cabo de Palos near La Manga filled the streets to protest against the plans to redevelop their iconic lighthouse.

More than 400 people filled the Las Dunas Commercial Centre to show their disapproval of a plan by the ruling Partido Popular (PP) to allow a private enterprise to turn the lighthouse into a hotel or casino.

At the head of the demonstration, locals carried a large banner containing the words ‘No se vende’ (Not for sale), reflecting the wish of the residents that the landmark stays as municipality property.

Among the 400 protestors were opposition members of the council representing, among others, the Socialist PSOE, Podemos, Ciudadanos (C’s) parties as well as those from ‘Save the Lighthouse’.
