FIFTY-THREE migrants have been rescued from a small boat near Benajarafe, six of whom have been taken to hospital for “mild injuries,” according to media reports.

Of the six, three were pregnant and have been transferred to the Mother and Child Hospital in Malaga, while the other three were taken to the Hospital Civil de Malaga.  Another 10 young people have were taken to hospital for tests to ascertain their age.

The fishing boat was rescued 14 miles off the coast of Benajarafe after attempting to cross from North Africa.  The vessel, holding 10 women and 43 men, was spotted by a rescue plane in the late afternoon, before a ship from the maritime rescue service was despatched, collecting the migrants and taking them to Malaga port, where they arrived at around 8pm.
