Lottery joy for Alicante

AREAS of Alicante have been celebrating their fortune after a lottery win of close to €5m was shared among the residents.

The number drawn as the first prize in Saturday’s Spanish National Lottery was 52490, and champagne corks were heard to pop across the city when the realisation dawned that a large number of local people had bought a share of that number and were about to be €60,000 to the good.  Most of the winners were pensioners, average families and the unemployed spending a few euros chancing their luck.

One winner said: “I am a chef and I became unemployed last month.  My husband has recently had a cancer operation and we have two small children.  There was a time in our lives when everything was black.  We can now see some light. We are so happy.”

Another, who lives in Virgen del Remedio, said while looking at one of his children he was holding: “We are now able to move and use this money as a deposit for a house in Mutxamel and try to give our children a brighter future.”

Others are planning to buy the house they’re renting, a new car, or share their good fortune with children and grandchildren.

Not all are smiling however.  Two brothers know they have two of the winning tickets but are unable to find four others which are worth €240,000.
