Popular Alicante street seller loses pitch

ONE of the permanent fixtures in the centre of Alicante has disappeared after 27 years.  Jose López, 68, who sold sticks of liquorice in the city for all that time has been fined for operating illegally and stopped selling his wares.

Residents and tourists alike have grown up with Jose on the corner of the Avenida Maisonnave – close to El Corte Inglés – and many wondered where he was when they missed him in his usual spot.  Some feared the worst, but later bumped into him in the city and he told them of his fate.

Jose has admitted that what he was doing was illegal and now waits to see whether he gets the lowest fine (€100) or the highest for the infringement (€3,000).
