THE man who tried to kill his wife in front of their children at their home in Denia was sentenced to five years in prison by the Provincial Court of Alicante this week.

The incident occurred in February last year and the man has been held in custody ever since.

The court heard how one afternoon, he approached his wife and in front of their three children told her: “I’m going to kill you today” and accused her of having an affair.

The woman and the children ran from the man and called the police, he then fled.

But the man returned hours later and seized a kitchen knife with which he tried to stab his wife.

Neighbours and one of the couple’s daughters intervened and managed to protect the woman and he fled again.

The man was captured by police and arrested a short while later and sent straight to prison.

He pleaded guilty to the offence and did not question the five-year sentence given for attempted murder.

The man will spend a further nine months in prison for the crime of ill-treatment of family members.
