26-YEAR-OLD Andres Contreras – one of the two surviving cyclists of the accident that occurred on the N-332 in May – was backstage at the La Vuelta checkpoint in Benitachell.

Andres’ father – Luis Alberto Contreras (53-years old) – was killed in the accident along with his friends Eduardo Monfort Gasent (28-years-old), and Jose Antonio Albi (28-years-old).

Benitachell Town Council arranged passes for Andres and his mother and the cyclist was delighted to meet Spanish champion Alberto Contador who wished him a speedy recovery.

Andres said he hopes his father, “wherever he is” shared with him and his mother the “magnificent day of cycling”.

Andres is still recovering at the Hospital Vithas Nisa Aguas Vivas in Carcaixent, Valencia.
