CEUTA priest Juan Jose Mateo has been made to step down after allowing a large statue of the Hindu god Ganesh to be carried into the Santuario de Santa Maria de Africa parish church and placed at the foot of a statue of the Virgin Mary.

Bishop Rafael Zornoza has expressed his “deep pain for this deplorable episode, which has caused confusion, damage and scandal within the Christian community”.
Meanwhile the Hindu community in the Spanish enclave comprising approximately 800 followers has said it cannot understand the reproof for an “act of co-existence” between religions.

Last Sunday, the community marked the birth of Ganesh with a procession through the city to the sea.

“For the last eight years we have made a stop at the Santuario de Santa María de Africa as an act of reverence because we also consider her to be the city’s patron saint. We do not understand the condemnation of the priest,” the president of the Hindu community in Ceuta, Ramesh Chandiramani, told the Spanish press.

  1. This is truly against The First Commandment of God The Father.
Exodus 20:2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
Exodus 20:3 “You shall have no other gods before me.
Exodus 20:4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
Exodus 20:5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God

  2. There is ONE LORD , ONE GOD. Christians cannot accept or co exist with any other religions who do not believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. We do co exist with one another but do not pray to other gods with them.
Our Christian commandments given to us by God state ” THOU SHALT NOT PUT STRANGE GODS BEFORE ME.

  3. There are a lot of similarities between Catholic and Hindus.

The Catholics pray to Mary, the saints, angels for this healing or that miracle through the designated being for that miracle and the Hindus pray to their lesser gods for this miracle or that miracle to the designated being for that miracle. They both have a main God.

Christians are told to pray to the Father in Jesus’ name only in the Bible.

    John 15:16
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.

    • I’m assuming you are not religious and think that religion is religion no matter the creed, it is just packaged differently. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think I am. Other people view religion as important and that was the reason for the reaction. Do you hold anything really important? If someone violated something that you held dear, would that cause you to become upset? Or would you say to yourself, “I must be tolerant and accept what happened.” Please give this some thought. Tolerance does not mean to sit back and let someone desecrate what you hold to be dear and say, “Oh well…we must allow our religion to be diluted until it means nothing. We should not put up a fuss.” If you don’t stand for anything you stand for anything.

      • I do not wish to denigrate anyones beliefs. everyone has a right to them but religion has been the cause of most wars in history, But yes you are quite right I do belong to the majority of U.K citizens who are athiests however unlike you sir Ido respect the beliefs of oyhers even If I do not share them.

        • I’d be interested in your statistics regarding the impetus for most wars in the world. I do know that more people were killed by atheistic Nazism and Communism in the 20th century than in all the other wars of history combined.

  4. In Mt 22:37 Jesus says “You shall Love your God with all your heart , and with all your soul , and with all your mind .” This means no dilutions and distractions can affect our Love for our God.
In Mt 22.39 again Jesus says “You shall love your neighbour as yourself ” .This means love all human beings created by God as yourself but not their gods with small letter “g” and their rituals.
