The unique slaughterhouse of Alicante

THROUGHOUT the Vega Baja and across the province of Alicante, there is only one abattoir qualified for the slaughter of lamb in the Halal tradition.

Found in Orihuela, it also has the only personnel that can carry out such rituals that follow strict regulations and use only official tools and equipment.

The festival of Eid al-Adha (the feast of sacrifice) has just been celebrated across the world honouring the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son, as an act of obedience to God’s command. Before Abraham sacrificed his son, God provided a male goat to sacrifice instead. In commemoration of this, an animal is sacrificed and divided into three parts: one third of the share is given to the poor and needy; another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbours; and the remaining third is retained by the family.

A total of 2,500 lambs were sacrificed for the Eid al-Adha festival in the Orihuela slaughterhouse which were distributed in the Vega Baja and to Alicante, Murcia, Albacete; and even abroad to France and Italy.

As much as 80 per cent of the production in Orihuela is destined for the Muslim population in the province although there has been a noticeable decline in the amount of sales of Halal meat in the region.
