A RESTAURANT in Javea has been named the ‘Best Gluten Free Restaurant in the Valencian Region’ by FACE (Federation of Celiac Associations in Spain).
RestauranteSur, located in the Granadella cove, will now be entered into FACE’s national competition to be named ‘Best Gluten Free Restaurant in Spain’ and will go head to head against restaurants in Badajoz, Donostia, Guadalajara, Logrono,Murica, Oviedo and Valladoid.
Jose Angel, co-owner of the family-run restaurant told the Spanish how, some eight years ago, a family member was diagnosed with coeliac disease.
Coeliac disease is a common digestive condition where the small intestine becomes inflamed and unable to absorb nutrients.
It can cause a range of symptoms including diarrhoea, abdominal pain and bloating.
Coeliac disease is caused by an adverse reaction to gluten, a dietary protein found in three types of cereal: wheat, barley and rye.
Gluten is found in any food that contains the above cereals, including: pasta, cakes, breakfast cereals, most types of bread, certain types of sauces and some types of ready meals.
Jose explained how the restaurant began to adapt its menu and now, 80 per cent of its dishes are suitable for coeliacs:
“The paellas and all of the rice dishes are made without gluten and we have gradually adapted almost all of the dishes.”
He continued: “We want coeliacs to be able to enjoy a good meal like anyone else.”
