A BONUS of Alicante hosting the Volvo Ocean Race that gets underway during next week is the amount of people flocking to the area to witness this sporting spectacular, and hoteliers are more than satisfied with the level of bookings to date.
They are predicting hotel occupancy to be around 70 per cent in Alicante city, 86 per cent on Playa San Juan, 76 per cent in El Campello and 82 per cent in Elche; levels that are never normally reached at this time of the year.
These estimated figures cover the period from October 13 – two days after the official inauguration of the Race Village in the Alicante port – until October 22, the departure date of the 2017/18 Volvo Ocean Race.
According to the hoteliers association APHA, the effects of the sailing event being held in the city make a major difference to the local economy and that October has been one of the most successful months during the years it takes place. They also acknowledge that connections from the nearby Alicante-Elche Airport make the city an attractive host venue and actively encourage more promotion of the spectacular in future years.
