GUARDAMAR DEL SEGURA Town Hall has announced an ambitious three-year project to guarantee the future of its famous sand dunes.
The plan is to implement a programme over a period of three years with the dunes seeing what has been described as “the greatest environmental project in a century” and to prevent to disappearance of the pine forest.
According to the environment councillor Silvestre García – who has described the plans as “exciting and ambitious” – the project will put an end to the slow and constant degradation of the dunes and the forest that has taken place over a number of years. He believes the work to be “vital and urgent” as failure to take action now will result in no pine forest at all within a few years. Much of the blame has been aimed at Mother Nature with less rain and hotter conditions and so there has been less and less natural regeneration.
García said: “It’s a restoration project where it’s going to be necessary to introduce a selection of plants that are compatible with the current habitat and climate and will survive and flourish in the extreme drought conditions being experienced.”
