DESPITE the building of the tunnel under San Pedro Alcantara in an effort to reduce delays, the problem of traffic jams between the town and Puerto Banus continues.

Recently returned Mayor of Marbella Ángeles Muñoz made a direct appeal to the minister responsible in Madrid, Íñigo de la Serna to explain the situation and to request assistance in building a third lane within the A-7.

The Minister of Public Works confirmed that the proposal had been approved at a cost of €17.8 million and includes a new pedestrian bridge between Puerto Banus and Nueva Andalucia as a number of people have been run over trying to dash across the road.

This project which also includes the improvement of exits to and from the A-7 will shortly go to tender  and it is recognised that the work once commenced could cause worse short term problems but should make the roads clearer and safer especially with the influx of summer tourists.

Mayor Muñoz also took the opportunity to explain her plans for improvement of the main access roads to the A-7 in the area of Las Chapas which will cost an annual €4 million to ensure safe and faster flow from the remaining Marbella Arch to the Costa del Sol Hospital.
