THE first outlet-style shopping centre dedicated to luxury brands in southern Spain is to open on the Costa del Sol.
It comes as British real estate developer McArthurGlen revealed it is to sink €140 million into the project at the Plaza Mayor complex near Malaga Airport.
The development, to be built alongside the existing centre, currently named McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Malaga, is forecast to create 1,000 jobs and open before Christmas 2018, according to development director Jose Luis Arenas.
The first phase of the project is underway and will house 100 stores in a 17,500 square-metre space, while a second phase will see 70 more shops added and push the centre beyond 30,000 square metres.
Retail units will be occupied by high-end brands offering products at bargain prices with discounts of 30-70 per cent.
Mr Arenas said that Plaza Mayor had been chosen due to its location close to Malaga capital and the airport, which sees 10 million tourists per year visit the area, plus its excellent road and rail connections.
He added that the development will be “a reference for the whole of southern Spain.”
