BENITACHELL’S municipal library was recognised for its commitment to the promotion of reading recently as it was awarded the National ‘Maria Moliner 2017’ Prize.

Maria Moliner (30 March 1900 – 22 January 1981) was a Spanish librarian and lexicographer known for her famous Diccionario de uso del espanol, first published in 1966–1967

The library in Benitachell was one of only 10 libraries in the Alicante Province to be recognised with the prize and received a grant of €1,706 towards the purchase of new books.

Benitachell’s Councillor of Culture Manolo Segarra said the council is “very grateful for the recognition, that rewards the ongoing work of the library to encourage reading among all audiences, regardless of their age and cultural tastes and innovative workshops adapted to different interests.”

The library has been open for 17 years and currently has 1,420 registered members – impressive given the population of Benitachell is only 4,104.

It made history earlier this year as it recorded its 10,000th book.

The library boasts 2,794 books aimed at children and young people – evidence of its commitment to the promotion of reading from an early age.
