Cemetery thieves detained and statues recovered

TWO people have been arrested in connection with the theft of a number of religious statues from two cemeteries.

A total of 13 figures – made up of angels, virgins and of Christ – have been recovered by officers of the National Police that were reported stolen from two cemeteries in Orihuela and comes in the wake of similar thefts from nine cemeteries in Redován.  It’s not known at this stage if the Redován robberies are linked to the people arrested.  They are a Portuguese woman aged 46 and a 35-year-old Spanish man.

Investigations were launched at the beginning of November when the robbery of religious statues from family vaults in two cemeteries in Orihuela was reported.  At the same time, a plaster statue of the patron saint of the municipality of Desamparados was stolen.
