WIDE smiles and the sound of popping champagne corks were the order of the day as millions of Euros were won on the world famous El Gordo Spanish Lottery, with €27.5 million landing in the municipality of Catral.
The third prize ticket number drawn on December 22 – 06914 – was worth €500,000 and the lottery office No1 in Catral was responsible for selling 550 ‘tenths’ of that winning number. Each lucky ticket holder received €50,000 and a large number of those tickets were bought by local residents who flocked to the lottery office once they realised they were ‘in the money’!
As they turned up, they were greeted by the Mayor, Pedro Zaplana, who was there with his parents that were also among the lucky winners. Celebratory T-shirts with the winning number printed on them were already being distributed. Judging by the amount of people that arrived, it was clear that the multi-million prize had been shared by many as is often the case in the Christmas El Gordo. It’s understood that a number of the ticket holders were also unemployed and so their good fortune has helped them through some difficult times.
