MONFORTE DEL CID RECREATES HISTORIC BATTLES

THERE are three days remaining of the Moors, Christians and Mercenaries marches in the municipality of Monforte del Cid, located close to Novelda in the Alicante province.  The fiesta is being held in honour of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception and includes a number of parades, re-enactments of historic battles, religious ceremonies and the ever present fireworks.  The events for the rest of the fiestas are:

Thursday December 7:

10.30am – Parade of the Moors, Christians, Mercenaries and the local dignitaries from the town hall to the Templo Parroquial.

11am – Mass.

12 noon – Parade to the location when the Embassy takes place.

1pm – Embassy (diplomatic speeches to avoid the war) of the Mercenaries, after which each company will parade to their headquarters.

4pm – Battle in the area surrounding the castle, which the Moors win.

5.30pm – Embassy of the Moors.

7pm – Parade of the Bajada de las Guerrillas along Calle de Reyes Catolicos and Avenida de Alicante.

Friday December 8:

10am – Parade for the Moors, Christians and the Mercenaries from the town hall to the Templo Parroquial.

12.30pm – General Parade of the Moors, Christians and the Mercenaries along Avenida de Alicante and Avenida de la Constitucion.

4pm – Battle in the area surrounding the castle, which the Christians win, symbolising the reconquest.

5.30pm – Embassy of the Christians.

6.30pm – Parade of the Bajada de las Guerrillas along Calle de Reyes Catolicos and Avenida de Alicante.

9pm – Solemn Procession with the statue of Our Lady La Inmaculada Conception, followed by a Grand Firework Display.

Saturday December 9:

10am – Alegre Diana (happy early morning parade) with the music bands.

11am – Parade of all of the companies along the streets of the town.

5pm – Lowering of the flags and the formal closing of the fiesta.
