San Javier Golf Society braves a cold start

Paul Newman Lo Romero

THE San Javier Golf Society Individual Stableford Qualifier Christmas competition was held on Monday, and the 30 plus golfers that turned out on a bitterly cold morning included one brave – some would say foolish – player who arrived wearing shorts.  It was Steve Branston, although it was the others that got into a pickle when they were suffering during the back nine as the temperatures rose into the mid 20’s

The Lo Romero Golf Course is one of the best courses in Murcia and although it’s a tough test for the golfers, it’s always an enjoyable experience to play there.  On this occasion, the day was enhanced by those that had donated some extra prizes to add to the festive spirit such as mince pies, chocolates and some wine.

The winners on the day were:

Division One: 1st – Paul Newman (35 points), 2nd – Ian Price (34) and 3rd – Frank Murphy (34).

Division Two: 1st – Congratulations and well done to new member Peter Ashton (36), 2nd – Steve Barlow (32) and 3rd – Clyde Sandry (32).

Division Three: 1st – Jeff Belt (35), 2nd – Jo Murphy (32) and 3rd – John Hillier (28)

Nearest the Pins were won by Simon Speak, Clyde Sandry, Frank Murphy and Paul Matthews; the Gross 2 (for €50) was won by Ty Willams.

The next game is the team ‘Traffic Lights’ competition at La Serena on Wednesday December 20 with a tee-off time of 9.50am; full details will be e-mailed to all members and payday will be on Saturday December 16 in the La Serena Club House bar area between 11am and 12 noon.
