Word up
THE NETHERLAND’S word of the year is ‘appongeluk’ – a traffic accident in which at least one of the involved parties were busy on their smartphones, Van Dale announced on Tuesday. Almost 70,000 votes were cast for the word of the year, appongeluk leading with 20 percent of the votes.

Woke with a shock
AN 81-YEAR-OLD WOMAN was hit by a stray bullet while sleeping in her bed on Japuradreef in the Utrecht neighborhood of Overvecht just after midnight on Monday. Police said the bullet was fired “probably with automatic firearms” in a shooting that left two other men injured, one of them seriously.

Still waiting
THE FAMILY of football legend Johan Cruijff regrets that that still no agreement has been reached about renaming the Amsterdam Arena to the ‘Johan Cruijff Arena’, Cruijff’s son Jordi told the Dutch press this week. Cruijff passed away in March last year and the matter of renaming the stadium in his honour was raised almost immediately.

Teacher faces jail
A 40-YEAR-OLD TEACHER at a trade school in Assen should be jailed for three years for the sexual abuse of a 13-year-old pupil, the public prosecution department said on Tuesday. The man also persuaded the young girl to commit sex acts in front of a camera and had some 900 photos of her in his possession.
