U3A Marina Baixa donates €1,200 to local charities

THREE local charities have recently benefited from donations from the U3A Marina Baixa Charity Fund.

Alfaz del Pi Food Bank
Last Monday, U3A Treasurer, Maureen Barrett, presented volunteers at the Alfaz del Pi Food Bank with a van-load of food worth €500. The food was bought with a donation from the U3A Marina Baixa Charity Fund. Items donated focused on children at Christmas and included a variety of: chocolate milk, juices, sweets, breakfast cereals, biscuits, chocolate and special treats for the festive season. The Food Bank volunteers will soon begin distribution to some of the poor and needy families in the area.

La Nucia Food Bank also received a €500 donation from the U3A Marina Baixa Charity Fund at the start of 2017.

Cruz Roja Espanola
Cruz Roja Espanola (Spanish Red Cross) provides help and support services, including Teleassistance, to people of all ages in the community. U3A members recently gained a better understanding of the organisation’s services when Pedro Dominguez, Cruz Roja Regional Technician for European Residents, gave a helpful presentation at their September General Meeting.

U3A President Elaine Mitchell presented Pedro with a cheque for €500 from the U3A Marina BaixaCharity Fund at the meeting and the money is being used to purchase equipment for the new Cruz Roja premises, which are due to open shortly in the centre of Alfaz del Pi.

Franciscan Shelter for Men at Palma de Gandia
The shelter provides a home and nursing care for around 65 homeless men, many of whom suffer from mental or physical illness, some of whom are terminally ill.

The hospice is funded entirely by charitable donations, with no state aid or official grants.
Hazel Layt is a constant helper and fundraiser for the shelter and she is also a member of U3A Marina Baixa.

Hazel was presented with a cheque for €200 from the U3A Marina Baixa Charity Fund which will be used to purchase provisions for a Christmas lunch for the residents. The lunch is prepared, cooked and served by Hazel with assistance from other volunteers including a few U3A members.
