THE heavy winds and rain that struck the region caused several frightening incidents in Mijas yesterday (Sunday).

Gales of up to 70 kilometres an hour – as well as waves of several metres – caused trees to topple and significant damage to other vegetation.

The severity of the storm meant that firefighters had to respond to 23 callouts throughout the day.

Mijas Civil Protection teams also played their part in attending affected areas, including the removal of several fallen trees in the Parque de Dona Ermita in Las Lagunas.

An orange weather warning remains in place until 6am on Tuesday January 30.

Winds are also expected to reach 80 kilometres per hour.
