ACOSOL wants to expand the use of recycled water to street cleaning in a move that could be extended throughout the Costa del Sol.
The management of the company has held a meeting with the council of the 11 affected municipalities to propose the idea, in an effort to prepare for the difficulties that a drought may bring in the coming months.
Currently recycled water is only used for the irrigation of golf courses, and the initiative requires the approval of the Junta de Andalucia which has not yet responded to the request.
A network of reservoirs could be constructed in the plans, with the recycled and treated water being transported through pipes from there.
It is believed that the Junta is examining whether the recycled water would meet the necessary sanitary standards, before making a decision.
