MORE than 100 local students from Torrevieja have taken part in a full day dedicated to planting trees and shrubs.
The occasion coincided with celebrating the ‘Festival of the Tree’ and part of the ‘Mare Natura’ programme that has been organised between the City Council and the IES Mare Nostrum school, and was centred around the Parque Natural de La Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja.
Also taking part and showing a keen interest in all the work being done was Torrevieja councillor Fanny Serrano, who stressed the importance the council places on commemorating such days. She thanked all those that volunteered their services, including some of the teachers. Together they have planted blackthorns, carob trees, mastic trees and kermes oaks provided by specialist forestry nurseries, all of which are native species of the peculiar environment that they will need to endure.
Director of the Parque Natural, Francisco Martinez, also explained the importance of this type of initiative in such arid areas which allow people to gain awareness in environmental issues.
